What is Kaila’s Komfort?

What is Chronic Recurrent Multifocal Osteomyelitis (CRMO)?
CRMO is a rare disease that involves inflammation of one or more bones, potentially becoming chronic. Inflammation is a normal process when our bodies are fighting off infections and germs. In individuals with CRMO, however, there is no infection. Instead, the immune system wrongly attacks healthy bones, thus causing inflammation that results in pain, redness, and/or swelling. This diagnosis of exclusion requires many tests, such as blood tests, x-rays, bone scans, MRIs, and bone biopsies, as confirmation. The cause of CRMO is unknown and there is no cure. Treatments vary and are primarily experimental as every individual responds differently to different courses of treatment. Because of these factors, much more research is needed to learn more about the development and treatment of CRMO. For more information about CRMO, visit the CRMO Awareness website here.

What is my personal connection to CRMO?
My friend Faith is part of a family near and dear to my heart. After being misdiagnosed for three years, she was finally diagnosed with CRMO at seven years old. She has suffered from lesions throughout her body, causing unbelievable amounts of inflammation and pain. Now a senior in high school, she is a prominent advocate for the CRMO community. She has partnered with many different organizations and agencies to educate others about this rare disease. Just look up “Faith CRMO” on YouTube and you will get a glimpse into the incredibly strong and dedicated nature of this CRMO warrior. Faith serves others and her community in a way that is absolutely inspiring—you would never guess at the pain she has, and continues to, endure.

When registering for the CRMO Awareness Virtual 5k, feel free to select “Team Faith—PNW Warriors” as your fundraising team.
